C1: Lesson One Assignment

Send an e-mail to your Instructor and include the following:

  1. Using a unicode font (e.g. Palatino Linotype, Gentium or Arial Unicode MS), type the Greek alphabet.
  • The recommended method is to use Randy Hoyt’s elegant little conversion tool. If you enter the characters “a b g” in the box found in the link below, they will be converted to unicode Greek characters α β γ. You can then highlight what you’ve typed, copy it, and paste it into an email to send to your instructor.
  • Another method is to set up your own keyboard so that you can type using unicode Greek characters. You can do this by following the instructions at John Schwandt’s website.

2. For each of the following vowels, give an English word that illustrates its pronunciation (you can use the examples from the lesson or you can be creative)…

  • alpha, α
  • epsilon, ε
  • short  iota, ι
  • omicron, ο
  • upsilon, υ
  • eta, η
  • long iota, ι
  • omega, ω
  • 3. Ask questions about whatever you don’t understand! It’s very important that you learn to write the alphabet, to pronounce the letters, and to phonetically pronounce words. I want you to do well in this course, and to do well in this course, you must learn the material in this first chapter well. So please, ask questions!

λέγει αὐτῇ, ὕπαγε φώνησον τὸν ἄνδρα σου…

    …καὶ ἐλθὲ ἐνθάδε.

ἀπεκρίθη ἡ γυνὴ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, οὐκ ἔχω ἄνδρα.
